Distinguished Service Award

Presentation: Monday, November 10, 9:45 am - 10:00 am, Hynes Convention Center Auditorium (following Presidential Plenary I)

Sherrie Cathcart was appointed Executive Director of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases in October 2000. Before joining AASLD, she served 11 years with the American College of Rheumatology in Atlanta, leaving as Deputy Executive Vice President. Ms. Cathcart, as so many of her generation have done, climbed the ranks of not-for-profit association management as the Director of Education for Emory University School of Dentistry, Director of Meetings for Scholars Press (American Academy of Religion/Society of Biblical Literature), and as Assistant Director of Meetings for the American Cancer Society. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Church Music from Shorter College and was a church organist for many years.

After 50 years of administration by physician leadership, the AASLD Central Office was established in 1997. As the second Executive Director, Ms. Cathcart inherited 2200 members and 12 staff as AASLD was completing its very successful 50th Anniversary celebration.

During her tenure over the past 13 years, AASLD has experienced much growth and success as a result of a dedicated collaboration between AASLD leadership, membership and staff. Membership has increased to over 4,000 with 8 membership categories. Attendance at AASLD's Liver Meeting has grown from 5500 in 2000 to just over 10,000 in 2013, with The Liver Meeting® now ranking in the top 50 U.S. medical meetings in 2013. AASLD supports three outstanding hepatology journals and offers multiple offerings of the latest hepatology science in various educational formats.

Ms. Cathcart retired from AASLD in May 2014. She, and her husband Steve, now live on Hilton Head Island, SC. "Everyone should be so fortunate to have enjoyed the company of truly great minds and compassionate people who strive to make this world and the lives of their patients a better one. It is a humbling thought and I’m so very grateful for it."
