Moscone West Convention Center, Room 2022
AASLD President Arthur J. McCullough, MD, will host a press conference on the first full day of presentations at The Liver Meeting®, the annual meeting of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases.
Dr. McCullough will highlight individual studies and themes from the almost 1600 abstracts to be presented at this year’s meeting from the leading researchers in the field. Topics will include pilot studies and clinical trials for hepatitis and the latest findings in fatty liver disease, as well as important research in the areas of hepatocellular carcinoma and controversial issues in liver transplantation. He has selected to review 20 abstracts in advance of their actual presentation in scientific sessions for the benefit of the media.
Dr. McCullough is a professor of medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University and chairman of the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. He is also the vice chair for Research for the Division of Medicine. His research interests include the study of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis and alcoholic steatohepatitis. The major research interests of his laboratory include the study of the normal response of protein and energy metabolism during feeding and how the presence of cirrhosis affects that response. Other areas of research include the further delineation of the causes of abnormal energy and protein metabolism in cirrhosis, while evaluating new nutritional and pharmacologic strategies in vivo to correct malnutrition in chronic liver disease.

The Liver Meeting® 2008 -- The 59th Annual Meeting of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases
San Francisco, CA – Moscone West Convention Center
October 31 – November 4, 2008
The Liver Meeting® is the premier meeting in the science and practice of hepatology, including the latest findings on new drugs, novel treatments, and the results from pilot and multicenter studies.
Approximately 10 percent of Americans have some form of liver disease, and the diseases strike disproportionately among certain populations but mostly regardless of lifestyle choices. There are now numerous treatments for both hepatitis B and C, and screening, treatment, and prevention of hepatitis remain important issues. Liver cancer is one of the few cancers growing in incidence, and the obesity epidemic has dire consequences for the nation’s liver health and wellness.
The approximately 1560 abstracts addressing these issues that will be presented are available to members of the press at our website (www.aasld.org), including almost 240 abstracts that will be presented in oral sessions.
