Session Description / Needs Statement

The goal of these lectures is to ensure patients with liver disease are adequately and appropriately managed during endoscopy.  The participant will learn latest standards of care for sedation and managing coagulopathy.  They will also learn the management of upper GI bleeds including variceal and non-variceal bleeding.  They will learn the latest management of biliary complications of liver transplant and the latest advances in hepatobiliary endoscopic ultrasounds, and endoscopic treatment of fatty liver.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Analyze optimal preparation and timing for patients with liver disease who will undergo endoscopic procedures
  • Identify the standards of care for treatment of upper GI bleeding conditions, including esophageal and gastric varices, ectopic varices, portal hypertension and vascular ectasias
  • Evaluate the applications and limitations of advanced endoscopic techniques and devices in patients with PSC, biliary strictures
  • Select and summarize appropriate endoscopic procedures for management of biliary complications of liver transplantation
  • Evaluate the applications of therapeutic endoscopic ultrasound, for drainage, bleeding, and diagnosis
  • Discuss the role and challenges of endoscopy in the treatment of fatty liver disease
