Acute on Chronic Liver Failure SIG

In the first part of the webinar, we will provide an overview regarding the definitions of acute on chronic liver failure and the management of the cirrhotic patient with multi-organ system failure. In the second part, we will discuss several recent publications regarding waitlist mortality and post-transplant outcomes for patients with severe acute on chronic liver failure.
Dr. Vinay Sundaram is currently a transplant hepatologist at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where he serves as the director of hepatology outcomes research and assistant medical director of liver transplantation. He went to medical school at New York University, followed by residency in internal medicine at the University of Virginia and gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh, where he also earned a Master of Science degree in clinical research. He then completed his training in transplant hepatology at Beth Israel Deaconess medical center. Dr. Sundaram has research interests in a variety of topics in hepatology, including acute on chronic liver failure, portal hypertension and post-transplant outcomes. He has first several publications regarding acute on chronic liver failure through analysis of public registries in high-impact journals including Gastroenterology, HEPATOLOGY and Journal of Hepatology. He is actively involved in AASLD and participates as chair of the Clinical Practice SIG education subcommittee, member of the ACLF SIG education committee and incoming chair of the membership and mentorship committee. He also serves on the editorial board for HEPATOLOGY and Hepatology Communications.
Dr. Constantine (Dean) Karvellas is an Associate Professor of Medicine (Critical Care Medicine and Gastroenterology/Hepatology) at the University of Alberta and an Adjunct Professor in the School of Public Health Sciences. He has been an attending intensivist in the E. Garner King General Systems Intensive Care Unit since 2009 and is involved with the Liver Transplant program as a Hepatologist. Dr. Karvellas is the only Canadian co-investigator in the NIH-funded United States Acute Liver Failure study group (US ALFSG). He is also a Vice Chair of the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) Liver management task force and serves as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Hepatology. Dr. Karvellas’ publications reflect his interests in acute liver failure (ALF), acute on chronic liver failure (ACLF), liver transplantation and extracorporeal liver support.
