This webinar is part one of a two-part series which features a hepatologist and a surgeon who helped to build and expand their center's living donor liver transplant programs. Attendees of this webinar will gain a greater understanding of how to build and sustain a high-volume living donor liver transplant program from the perspective of a hepatologist and a transplant surgeon who each helped to grow their respective living donor programs.

About the Presenters

Kiran Bambha, MD, MSc

Dr. Kiran Bambha is Associate Professor of Medicine and Medical Director of Living
Donor Liver Transplant at the University of Washington

Abhinav Humar, MD

Dr. Abhinav Humar is the Clinical Director of the Thomas E. Starzl Transplantation Institute and the Chief, Division of Transplantation in the Department of Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.  He is also a Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and a Staff Physician at the Pittsburgh VA Medical Healthcare System. 

Dr. Humar received his medical degree from the University of Ottawa, from which he graduated magna cum laude and was the silver medalist of his class. He earned a research and clinical fellowship in transplant surgery at the University of Minnesota in 1996.

Dr. Humar’s clinical interests include:

  • Adult and pediatric abdominal transplants (kidney, liver, pancreas, and bowel)
  • Living-related and split liver transplants
  • Hepatopancreaticobiliary surgery

His research interests are:

  • Partial liver transplants and studies of hepatic regeneration
  • Clinical outcomes both short and long term in donors and recipients of living donor liver transplants
  • Clinical studies and trials to promote tolerance after transplant

About the Moderator

Pratima Sharma, MD

Dr. Pratima Sharma, transplant hepatologist and health services researcher, is an associate professor of medicine at the University of Michigan and a Staff Physician at Ann Arbor VA hospital. She is a Vice Chair of Liver and Transplant Surgery SIG. She is currently serving as the interim medical director of liver transplant program at University of Michigan. Her research interests are liver allocation, access and outcomes pertaining to renal dysfunction before and after liver transplant.
