AASLD understands there are many challenges, current and anticipated, to train and sustain a robust workforce of hepatology specialists. One of the foreseen needs is training and sustaining a workforce of physicians, scientists and health professionals who focus on the study of and treatment of liver diseases.
AASLD contracted with the Academy for Academic Leadership (AAL) to conduct a comprehensive workforce study. AAL, in concert with the AASLD Workforce Study Group, will gather information from several sources, among which is this Workforce Study Survey.

Because hepatology has been recognized as a discipline only in the last few decades, and the last workforce study took place over 15 years ago, now is a pivotal time for the AASLD. Many changes in the field of hepatology have occurred since the last workforce study.
A workforce analysis will provide information regarding the current workforce, including demographic and background characteristics of the current workforce retirement eligibility, turnover, and various workforce management issues (i.e., recruitment and retention). This information provides valuable insight in understanding the supply and demand of the workforce across the AASLD, identifying current capacity and future trends impacting the workforce. It will inform workforce training needs and succession planning by providing a basis for action to address demographic and employment trends that may impact future mission capabilities. It is critical to develop appropriate research capacity to monitor and understand patterns and relationships and better coordinate collaboration to discover the most cost-effective ways to improve existing knowledge about the prevention and treatment of liver diseases across the lifespan.
