Dr. Thung is a Professor of Pathology and Gene and Cell Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York, and an attending pathologist at Mount Sinai Health System. She is a founding member and past president of the Hans Popper Hepatopathology Society. She is a member of the editorial boards of the World Gastroenterology Journal, Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Hepatology Research, and Seminars in Liver Disease.

She received her MD at the University of Indonesia Medical School, Jakarta. She completed residency in pathology at the Bronx Veterans Administration Medical Center, New York, and a fellowship in immunopathology at Mount Sinai Health System. She is a co-investigator on active studies for The Boston Scientific Corporation and The Alvarez Educational and Philanthropic Foundation. She has co-authored more than three hundred original articles in notable journals, including Hepatology, Gastroenterology, Transplantation, the International Journal of Hepatology, and Liver International.

Dr. Thung has been an AASLD member since 1977 and become an AASLD Fellow in 2014.
