Dr. Albhaisi is an Assistant Professor of Medicine and a Clinical Hospitalist in the Department of Internal Medicine at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine in Richmond, VA, USA.
Her research interests are nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) cirrhosis. In 2019 she was awarded the AASLD Emerging Liver Scholar Award for her research achievements. Her primary mentor is Dr. Arun Sanyal.
Dr. Albhaisi was born in Gaza, Palestine. She lived in Abu Dhabi, UAE, and received her MBBS degree in Dubai Medical College, Dubai, UAE. She completed residency in Internal Medicine at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine.
She is currently involved in multiple studies of NAFLD and metabolic syndrome. A key focus is the role of metabolic basis for progressive liver disease and development of cancer. She is studying the role of obesity-associated hypogonadism in males and its role in NASH. She is also studying the clinical outcomes of NAFLD and is investigating different modalities for diagnosis and management of NAFLD to translate them into clinical practice. An additional direction for her research is identifying metabolic health and demographic disparities in NAFLD.
Dr. Albhaisi has been an AASLD member since 2018, and is currently a member of the NAFLD SIG and serves on the Education Subcommittee.
