Biography
I am a researcher at Hospital Clínic Barcelona, affiliated with the Chronic Liver Diseases: Molecular Mechanisms and Clinical Consequences group, where I hold an R3A-level accreditation. My work focuses on the complications of decompensated liver disease—particularly cirrhosis—and aims to identify prognostic biomarkers and therapeutic strategies.I have authored more than 100 research publications, which have collectively received over 1,600 citations. Among my recent work is a landmark randomized multicenter trial (ALBUCAT), which demonstrated that short-term intravenous albumin administration improves serum sodium levels in hospitalized cirrhotic patients with dilutional hyponatremia.I am also involved in research on novel biomarkers, including soluble Programmed death-ligand 1 (sPD-L1), urinary L-FABP (liver fatty-acid binding protein) and NGAL (neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin), which have shown significant prognostic value in bacterial infection development, acute-on-chronic liver failure and mortality prediction.Beyond my clinical and translational research, I actively contribute to public health initiatives such as cirrhosis screening strategies across Europe. I co-authored a comprehensive review exploring the promises and pitfalls of population-level liver fibrosis and cirrhosis screening in high-risk populations.
