Biography

Dr. Espy Schaefer is a hepatologist and GI/liver hospitalist at Mass General Brigham, where she has served on the faculty since completing her residency and GI fellowship at MGH. She holds an undergraduate degree from Yale and an MD/MPH from Columbia University. After starting her research career as a basic and translational investigator in viral hepatitis, she co-founded the MGB alcohol liver disease clinic and biorepository which forms the basis of much of her current clinical research, including integrated addiction and hepatology care and biomarkers in ALD. Dr. Schaefer clinically focuses on inpatient GI and hepatology care with a special focus on improving care for patients with alcohol-related liver disease. She is also deeply enmeshed in the clinical education for the GI fellows and rotating residents on the GI and liver consult services and the recipient of multiple teaching awards.
