Biography

Maria Reig, MD, PhD, is an internationally recognized physician-scientist specializing in liver diseases and liver cancer. She is currently Head of the Hepatic Oncology Unit at Hospital Clínic Barcelona, Head of the Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) group at IDIBAPS, and Head of the Hepatic Oncology Group at CIBEREHD. She is also a member of the CIBEREHD Steering Committee. Her work focuses on advancing clinical research, innovation, and treatment strategies for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma.Dr. Reig has published 172 peer-reviewed articles in leading international journals, with more than 20,700 citations and an h-index of 51. She has played a key role in the evolution of the BCLC strategy, contributing to the development of innovative concepts in clinical decision-making such as CUSE and leading the 2026 BCLC update. Her research has also been supported by major competitive grants and international collaborations in translational oncology, immunotherapy, and precision medicine.Beyond research, Dr. Reig has held major leadership roles in the international liver cancer community. She is Chair of the International Working Group of the Liver Cancer Council at the Global Liver Institute and has served on the boards of ILCA, AEEH, ERN-rareLiver, and EASL. She was the first woman to chair the EASL Scientific Committee and to lead hepatocellular carcinoma management guidelines in both Spain and Europe. Dr. Reig is also deeply committed to education and mentorship, supervising doctoral and master's students and promoting multidisciplinary excellence in liver cancer care.
