Biography
As a Research Professor at the Institute for Liver and Digestive Diseases at Hallym University, South Korea I lead a research program centered on the gut-liver axis, investigating how the gut microbiome drives the progression of chronic liver conditions. My work is dedicated to addressing a critical clinical need in hepatology: the development of non-invasive tools to better diagnose and manage chronic liver diseases. Our approach is rooted in translational science, integrating multi-omics data including primarily metagenomics and metabolomics from well-phenotyped liver patient cohorts to build a systems-level view of host-microbe interactions. This has allowed us to identify distinct microbial and associated-metabolic signatures that are not only connected with disease severity but are also predictive of debilitating complications like sarcopenia. As research group, our ultimate goal is to move these discoveries from the bench to the bedside. By understanding the specific mechanisms through which microbial dysbiosis impacts liver pathology, from compromised gut barrier function to the production of key metabolites, I aim to develop clinically actionable biomarkers and lay the groundwork for novel microbiome-targeted therapeutics, whether through diet, live biotherapeutics, or small molecules
