Takao Miwa, MD, PhD

Takao Miwa, MD, PhD, is a physician-scientist and Visiting Scholar in the Department of Medicine at the University of California San Diego and is affiliated with the Department of Gastroenterology/Internal Medicine at Gifu University, Japan. His research focuses on chronic liver diseases, particularly steatotic liver disease, liver cirrhosis, hepatic encephalopathy, malnutrition, and sarcopenia. His work integrates clinical and translational research, large-scale cohort and biobank analyses, and mechanistic studies to better understand disease progression and identify prognostic biomarkers. He has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications and has received several young investigator and rising star awards. At UC San Diego, he conducts research under the mentorship of Professor Bernd Schnabl, with a particular interest in steatotic liver disease and the gut–liver axis.
