Biography
Zobair M. Younossi, MD, MPH, FACP, FACG, AGAF, FAASLD is Chairman of the Global NASH/MASH Council (GNC) in Washington, DC, and Professor of Medicine and Chairman of the Global Center for Liver Outcomes & Policy Research at the Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, DC. Dr. Younossi received his medical degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine (AOA, 1989), completed fellowship training in gastroenterology and hepatology at the Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation (1989-1995), and obtained a Master of Public Health from San Diego State University (with multiple honors, 1995). He served on the faculty of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation from 1995-2000 before establishing the Center for Liver Diseases and the Beatty Liver and Obesity Research Program at Inova Health System in Virginia, where he worked from 2000 to 2026. During his tenure at Inova, Dr. Younossi held several leadership positions, including Chairman of the Department of Medicine (2011–2024), President of Inova Medicine (2019–2024), Chairman of Research (2005–2022), Vice Chairman of the Board of the Inova Foundation (2011–2024) and Chairman, Beatty Liver and Obesity Research Program (2008-2026). He currently also serves as President of the Chronic Liver Disease Foundation (since 2018) and Chairman of the Global Liver Council (since 2014).Dr. Younossi has pioneered research in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD/NAFLD) and outcomes research in liver disease. He has authored nearly 900 peer-reviewed publications and more than 1,220 abstracts, delivered over 550 invited lectures worldwide, and has an H-index of 158 with 167,441citations. According to ScholarGPS (2022–2025), he is the most cited life time scholar in liver disease worldwide.
