Arun Sanyal, MD, FAASLD

Dr. Sanyal is a leading global authority in liver diseases and ranked in the top 0.1% of biomedical scientists worldwide and currently serves as the Chair of the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition and Director of the Stravitz-Sanyal Institute for Liver Diseases and Metabolic Health at Virginia Commonwealth University. His work has focused on end-stage liver disease and virtually all facets of metabolic dysfunction related liver disease (MASLD), the most common cause of liver disease, and provided foundational concepts about the disease biology, clinical course, use of diagnostic tests and current therapeutics. He has led the scientific efforts as principal investigator of studies that have brought multiple drugs to market for liver disease bringing access to care for millions. His work has further linked the liver disease in the causal pathway of many noncommunicable disease making the impact of his work much greater than just that related to liver disease. He has been continuously funded by the NIH since 1995 and has over 600 publications including numerous papers in the New England Journal of Medicine, Nature Medicine, Lancet, JAMA etc. and has a H-index of 187 with the highest citations in the fields of gastroenterology and hepatology worldwide last year with over 20000 citations in one year. He has chaired the NIH NASH Clinical Research Network since its inception and overseen the seminal contributions of this consortium to the field. He also leads biomarker science for liver and fibrosis at the FNIH. He has served and chaired NIH study sections and also served on the advisory council of the NIAAA and multiple liver centers including those at Yale University and University of Southern California. His stature was recognized by becoming the first Asian to become the Secretary and then President of the American Association for Study of Liver Disease the pinnacle professional body for liver disease. He is also the editor of the Zakim and Boyers Text Book of Hepatology read by aspiring hepatologists throughout the world as a reference text. He served as a founding member of the American Board of Internal Medicine Committee for Advanced Transplant Hepatology thus making Hepatology and independent discipline within Medicine. He has impacted drug development not only through his research but by establishing the liver forum that provides a platform for academics to interact with the FDA and EMA to accelerate drug development. His commitment, dedication and excellence in liver disease and metabolic health has been recognized by numerous organizations with awards such as the American Gastroenterology Association Distinguished Mentor Award and the American Association for Study of Liver Disease Distinguished Achievement Award the highest professional recognition within liver diseases and the DMDSC Lifetime Achievement Award from Dr. Mohans Diabetes Institute in Chennai India.
