Biography
Emmanuel Gonzales is a pediatric hepatologist at the Bicêtre Hospital (Assistance Publique - Hôpitaux de Paris, Université Paris-Saclay). He studied Medicine at the University Pierre et Marie Curie in Paris. He performed his residency in pediatrics in Paris and received his Medical Degree in 2006. In 2010, he obtained his PhD degree in cellular and molecular biology at the University Paris-Sud.Since 2009, Emmanuel Gonzales has combined clinical work as a staff member of the pediatric hepatology and liver transplantation Unit with clinical and fundamental research. He was appointed assistant professor in 2009, associate professor in 2013 and full professor in 2015. Since 2017, he has been coordinating the French reference network for rare pediatric liver diseases. His research projects involve rare pediatric liver diseases (genetic cholestasis, biliary atresia, vascular liver diseases) and liver transplantation. In 2026, he was appointed head of the pediatric hepatology and liver transplantation Unit of Bicêtre Hospital. He has coauthored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications in the field of pediatric hepatology. He teaches pediatric hepatology at academic and post academic levels. Since 2020, he has been a member of the Hepatology Committee of the ESPGHAN. He received the 2012 AASLD pediatric research award for his work on targeted pharmacotherapy with 4-phenylbutyrate in selected PFIC2 patients carrying missense variants.
