Biography

Dr. Mitchell Mah'moud is a distinguished physician, educator, and academic leader who serves as Professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology at Duke University School of Medicine. With decades of experience in clinical care, medical education, research, and professional leadership, he has established a reputation as an expert in liver diseases. Dr. Mah'moud earned his medical degree from the University of Ibadan Medical School. Thereafter, he completed his residency training in Internal Medicine at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, followed by fellowship training in Digestive Diseases at Yale University School of Medicine. He later served as a Clinical Instructor of Medicine at Yale SOM and Attending Gastroenterologist at the West Haven VA Medical Center, where he contributed to patient care and physician training.In 1997, Dr. Mah'moud joined the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, where he served as Assistant Professor of Medicine, Director of Clinical Hepatology, and Associate Program Director of the Gastroenterology Fellowship Program. Since joining Duke University, he has continued to play an important role in educating medical students, residents, and fellows while maintaining an active clinical practice.Dr. Mah'moud is board certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology and also holds a doctorate degree in Theology. His clinical interests include liver diseases, including the management of patients before and after liver transplantation and general gastroenterology. He has served as an investigator in numerous clinical trials focused on liver disorders and has authored a wide range of scholarly publications.A respected leader within organized medicine, Dr. Mah'moud is a Fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology, the American Gastroenterological Association, and the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases. Throughout his career, he has served on multiple national committees related to education, ethics, clinical practice, maintenance of certification, audit and international relations. He was also a founding Executive Board member of the AGA Center for GI Innovation and Technology. His contributions extend to peer review activities, abstract evaluation for major scientific meetings, and service as an external reviewer for gastroenterology-related matters with the North Carolina Medical Board.Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dr. Mah'moud is deeply committed to global health and the training of gastroenterology and liver specialists in resource-limited regions around the world. He is a frequent speaker and moderator at national and international conferences, sharing his expertise in liver disease and advancing medical education globally.
