Biography

Dr. Daniel Leung is a clinician-scientist in pediatric gastroenterology and hepatology who has
devoted his career to the study and care of children with cystic fibrosis associated liver disease (CFLD) and CF
gastrointestinal and nutritional complications. He is well recognized for his work in the validation of serum
and imaging biomarkers of pediatric liver fibrosis as predictors of clinical outcomes in CF. Dr. Leung has
extensive experience in clinical trial design/execution/interpretation. Dr. Leung had the opportunity to help co-lead the CFF/NIH-supported multicenter,
longitudinal, observational cohort Baby Observational and Nutrition Study (BONUS) that first identified a relative
growth hormone deficiency as a potential missing link for the persistent height deficiencies in CF despite newborn
screening and significantly higher caloric supplementation. His unique GI and nutritional expertise in the
field of CF has also resulted in important collaborations revealing an immature and less diverse fecal microbiome
of poorly growing CF infants. Dr. Leung is a Professor of Pediatrics (with tenure) within the Division of
Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition at BCM where he serves as Director of Hepatology and Liver
Transplant Medicine at Texas Children's Hospital. Dr. Leung was an inaugural member of the
Developing Innovative Gastroenterology Specialty Training (DIGEST) class to develop clinical and
research expertise in the gastroenterological and liver care of people with CF and now externally mentors promising early-career physician scientists through the CF Foundation sponsored Research Additional Mentoring Program (RAMP)
