Biography

He was born in Isparta, Turkey in 1952.
In 1976, He graduated from the Ankara University Medical Faculty, where in 1980 he became a specialist in Internal Medicine, and in 1985 in Gastroenterology. In 1988, He became an associate professor and in 1994, a professor of Gastroenterology.

As a Monbusho Scholarship recipient, he studied the early diagnosis of cancer in the gastrointestinal system for one and a half years in Japan. In 1990, he studied cytologic and histopathologic examination of stomach cancer for four months, again in Japan. As a visiting professor, He worked with the Cleveland Clinic of Florida, in July of 1999.

Presently, He is working in Istanbul Health and Technology University as a vice-president. He is interested in portal hypertension, hepatitis B, D, C virus infections, early gastrointestinal cancers and hydatid diseases. Currently, He has around 170 papers written in Turkish and in English and chapters of 19 books.

He is past president of Turkish Gastroenterology Association, an executive committee member of Asian Pacific Association Study of Liver (APASL). He is a member steering committee of APASL.
He is a permanent and honorary member of Turkish Sciences Academy,
He is the elected president of APASL annual meeting, İstanbul 2026.
He is married and he has three children. He fluently speaks English, intermediate French and intermediate Japanese.
