Robert de Knegt is a senior consultant at the Erasmus MC University Medical Center Rotterdam, the Netherlands. He received his medical degree at the Erasmus MC, where he also did his thesis on hepatic encephalopathy. He was clinically trained in Internal Medicine (Leiden University Medical Center) and in Gastroenterology & Hepatology (Groningen University Medical Center). Then he started his current position at the Erasmus MC. Shortly thereafter he was trained in abdominal ultrasound at the University Medical Center (MHH) in Hannover (Germany). His main scientific interest has been in hepatitis C and metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD). Currently he is the Director of the training program for residents in Gastroenterology & Hepatology, and he is the Director of the Abdominal Sonography program in the Erasmus MC (Dpt. Gastroenterology & Hepatology). This encompasses a large program mainly in patients with liver cirrhosis or after liver transplantation, and gastrointestinal ultrasound. Since 2025 he is a member of the EASL Educational Committee.
