Robert Porte, MD, PhD

Biography

Robert J. Porte, MD, PhD, is Professor of Surgery and an hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) and transplant surgeon at the Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. He received his surgical training at the Leiden Medical Center in the Netherlands and additional training in transplant surgery during an ASTS approved fellowship at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC. He subsequently worked at the University Medical Center in Groningen for 25 years, where he served as Chief of HPB-Surgery, Director of the Liver Transplant Program, and Chair of the Groningen Transplant Center. As of January 1st, 2023, he has been appointed as Chief of HPB and Transplant Surgery at the Erasmus University Medical Center in Rotterdam. Prof. Porte is a primary and co-investigator of several research projects in the field of organ transplantation, with special interest in machine preservation, biliary injury, hemostasis and intra-operative blood loss. He is past Secretary General of the European Liver and Intestine Transplantation Association (ELITA) and past President of the Netherlands Transplantation Society. In 2023, he received the Distinguished Hepatology Award from the Netherlands Association for Study of the Liver (NASL) or his lifetime achievements. Robert Porte is the author of more than 480 scientific publications and has contributed to more than 20 books. He has received several awards and has been an invited speaker at numerous scientific meetings.
