Biography

Dr. Tess Bittermann is a transplant hepatologist and epidemiologist. She recently transitioned from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia to a joint position at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital and the Queensland Institute for Medical Research in Brisbane, Australia. Her research focuses on the practice heterogeneity and understanding the comparative risks and benefits of immunosuppression strategies among transplant recipients and patients with autoimmune hepatitis. Additional areas of interest include living donor liver transplantation, health disparities and healthcare utilization in liver disease. She has received mentored and independent R01 grant funding from the NIH, as well as pilot funding from the AASLD Foundation and the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
She is a prior recipient of the 2020 AASLD Foundation Autoimmune Hepatitis Pilot Research Award, the 2023 AASLD Foundation Pilot Research Award and is currently a member of the AASLD Practice Guidelines Committee.
