Beyond the Transplant: Innovation, Survival, and the Patient Journey

Description

Developed by the Patient Advisory Group, this informative session explores the evolution of transplantation (ideal versus less-than-ideal donors) and the impact of machine perfusion on liver transplants. Presenters discuss challenges for long-term transplant survivors including models to inform. The patient perspective is shared with a discussion of mental health challenges, including hepatic encephalopathy, depression, and family discussions. Panelists also touch on transplant access disparities and how patients can overcome them.

Objectives

  • Describe how expanding donor criteriaincluding living donation and machine perfusionhas increased access to liver transplantation and enabled earlier intervention.
  • Identify key challenges faced by long-term transplant survivors, including care coordination, access to specialists and medications, and strategies to support ongoing healthespecially in rural settings.
  • Recognize disparities in transplant access (eg, geographic and MELD-related) and evaluate patient-centered strategies to navigate the system and improve timely access to transplantation.
