Frailty and Metabolic Health in Transplant Candidates

Description

This session explores the interplay between frailty, metabolic health, and long-term outcomes across the liver transplant continuum. Presentations characterize frailty and cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic risk from candidacy through post-transplant recovery, and examine emerging therapeutic strategies—including GLP-1 receptor agonists—to improve survival and reduce cardiometabolic complications. Together, these studies highlight opportunities to refine risk stratification and intervene on modifiable factors that shape recipient outcomes.

Objectives

  • Apply outcome-based frailty and metabolic phenotyping tools to identify liver transplant candidates and recipients at elevated risk for adverse outcomes.
  • Evaluate the impact of cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic syndrome on cardiovascular, renal, and graft outcomes after liver transplantation.
  • Describe the association between GLP-1 receptor agonist use and survival, cardiometabolic outcomes, and rejection risk in transplant recipients with diabetes or obesity.
  • Recognize the prevalence and clinical significance of post-transplant cognitive impairment and its link to pre-transplant frailty.
