Biography


Dr. John C Rwegasha.MD, FRCP(Lond),
Consultant Physician Gastroenterologist.
Adj. Senior Lecturer –Muhimbili University of Health Sciences (MUHAS)
Head of Medical Services Division- African Union Commission

He is an experienced principle medical specialist with 12 years of hospital managerial experience; serving at various capacities at Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH); initially as Head of Gastroenterology Unit, Head of Internal Medicine Department and Director for Medical Services since joining the Institution in May 2011 till January 2025. He is a senior faculty member at Muhimbili University of Health Sciences. (MUHAS) and currently serving at the capacity of Head of Medical Services Division of the African Union Commission in Addis Ababa -Ethiopia.

He managed and facilitated the establishment of a Modern Gastroenterology Training Center in the Eastern Africa at the Hospital, through collaborative joint efforts with Gastro Foundation –Munich Germany, which is currently providing GI interventional therapeutic services and advanced endoscopic training to Specialist GI fellows; as Head of Internal Medicine Department, he was instrumental in bringing up departmental changes on quality of specialist service output through improved accountability and adherence on code of ethical conduct among the departmental staff that led to improved key outputs such as reduction in mortality and morbidity among other KPIs.

He is also served/serving at various leadership and advisory capacities including, Chairman of Muhimbili Hospital Tender Board; Chairman of Muhimbili Hospital Therapeutic Committee; Member of Muhimbili Hospital Ethical Review Committee(IRB); Chairman of Muhimbili Kidney Transplantation Authorization Committee; Chairman of Liver Transplant Program at Muhimbili Hospital; Member of Muhimbili Institutional ICT Steering Committee; National Lead for Expanded Access to Blood Disorders In Tanzania, including several consultancy assignments both at Ministry of Health and International Health Platforms.

He holds a Bachelor of Medicine Degree (MB.ChB) from Makerere University Uganda(1998); and a Master of Medicine Degree from Aga Khan University Kenya; Fellow and Faculty of London's Royal College of Physicians UK; Fellow in Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Interventional Endoscopy from African Institute of Digestive Diseases(AIDD), University of Witwatersrand, South Africa; additionally, he holds Master of Science Degree in Leadership and Management from Mzumbe University Tanzania and Fellow of the Global Health from University of Washington, USA.

Dr. Rwegasha, has authored and co-authored several publications on Viral Hepatitis through reputable International Journals and he is currently a Lead Researcher on a WHO Guideline-Demonstration Project for Care and Treatment of Viral Hepatitis B Mono Infection in Tanzania.
