2025 APASL Trainee Workshop Winners

Jin-Qiu Zhao, PhD

Dr. Jin-Qiu Zhao is an Associate Professor at the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University (CQMU). With a strong commitment to clinical excellence, research innovation, and medical education, Dr. Zhao has established herself as a respected figure in liver disease.

Education & Training
Dr. Zhao earned her medical degree and PHD from Chongqing medical university, followed by research training in University of Hawaii. She completed her residency and fellowship at the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University, where she developed expertise in liver disease.

Clinical & Research Focus
As a clinician-scientist, Dr. Zhao’s work focuses on the molecular mechanisms of liver cancer. She has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals such as Hepatology and CDD, contributing to advancements in liver disease. Her research has been supported by grants from National Natural Science Foundation of China and so on.

Teaching & Leadership
Committed to medical education, Dr. Zhao mentors medical students, residents, and fellows at CQMU. She serves as committee member of a Infectious Diseases Society, Chinese Medical Doctor Association. Her teaching philosophy emphasizes evidence-based practice and patient-centered care.

Honors & Awards
Dr. Zhao has been recognized with numerous awards, including THE BEST ORAL PRESENTING AWARD in the 34th Annual Meeting of APASL.

Matthew Shing Hin Chung, BSc, PhD Candidate

Matthew Chung is currently a PhD student at the Department of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong. He obtained a BSc degree in Mathematics and Statistics from Lancaster University in 2018.

Matthew Chung’s research interests focus on big-data analysis, with a particular emphasis on retrospective administrative database research related to liver disease and pharmacoepidemiology. He has published approximately 20 articles in peer-reviewed journals, including publications in Nature Medicine, JAMA Network Open, and the World Journal of Hepatology. His publication “Nirmatrelvir/ritonavir use in pregnant women with SARS-CoV-2 Omicron infection: a target trial emulation” has received the Best Faculty Prize in 2024. Additionally, he was awarded the Best Oral Presentation Award at the APASL-AASLD Workshop in 2025.

Nana Peng, PhD Candidate

Nana Peng is a PhD student at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, affiliated with the Medical Data Analytics Center in the Department of Medicine and Therapeutics. Her research lies at the intersection of data science and medicine, where she developed AI-driven solutions using real-world data to advance hepatology, aiming to transform data into actionable clinical insights for better patient outcomes.

Tengfei Si MD, PhD

Dr. Tengfei Si is a hepatobiliary surgeon and physician-scientist at the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine. He completed his Ph.D. at King’s College London, where his research focused on mucosal-associated invariant T (MAIT) cells in the hepatic immune microenvironment. His work integrates translational immunology and clinical practice, with recent projects exploring immune cell dysfunction in hepatocellular carcinoma and pediatric portal hypertension. Dr. Si has published in high impact journals and actively contributes to national and international liver disease research collaborations.
