2027 AGA-AASLD Academic Skills Workshop

The 2027 AGA-AASLD Academic Skills Workshop (ASW) is a collaborative initiative hosted by the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) and the American Association for the Study of Liver Disease (AASLD), to help GI fellows and early career members pursue a future in academic medicine. Participants will have the opportunity to explore the field by gaining direct access to leading faculty, receive guidance on topics such as how to build a career in health services research, and learn how to maximize and build a network of peers.
Sessions will include:
- Academic Skills: Presenting, Publishing, and Promoting Your Research [Panel Discussion]
- Funding Your Research Path: NIH / Early Career Funding
- Understanding The Editorial Process
- What To Look for in a Mentor
Lodging accommodations are covered by AGA, and selected participants are responsible for arranging and covering their travel expenses. To be considered, applications must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. PT Monday, Sept. 28, 2026.

Eligibility
To be eligible to apply, the applicant must fulfill the following criteria:
- Must be an active member of AASLD or AGA
- Must be a second or third-year fellow or junior faculty member (defined as within four years of starting their first faculty appointment)
- Please note: First year fellows are not eligible
- Must be able to attend the in-person workshop March 5-7, 2027, in Chicago, Illinois
For purposes of the Academic Skills Workshop, fellows-in-training and junior faculty are defined as:
- Fellows-in-training: Eligible fellows-in-training are defined as second-and third-year fellows only. First year fellows are not eligible to participate in this opportunity.
- Junior Faculty: Junior Faculty is defined as within four years of starting their first faculty appointment at the instructor or assistant professor level in a clinical or basic science department. Junior faculty members who have yet to start their first position will need to submit a letter from an academic institution verifying that they have accepted a faculty position.

The 2027 Academic Skills Workshop Directors and Co-directors will also be in attendance to present selected attendees with practical insights for a career in academic medicine.

Required Documents
To successfully complete an application, applicants must submit all materials in PDF format unless otherwise noted:
- Current CV or biosketch
- 500 words or less personal statement describing research interests and how the AGA-AASLD Academic Skills Workshop will advance the participant’s career
- One letter of recommendation from a program director or section chief
- One page (or less) research proposal with background, specific aims, and methods
