ALEXANDRIA, Virginia (January 31, 2025) — The American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) and the International Liver Transplantation Society (ILTS) are pleased to announce the appointment of the next Editors-in-Chief for Liver Transplantation, Dr. Andrés Cárdenas, MD, MMSc, PhD, AGAF, FAASLD, Hospital Clinic, University of Barcelona, Spain and Dr. Timucin Taner, MD, PhD, Mayo Clinic Rochester, Minnesota.
A premier, peer-reviewed journal, Liver Transplantation provides cutting-edge articles on liver transplantation, surgery, and chronic liver disease, equipping clinicians and researchers with the latest insights in this evolving specialty.
Dr. Andrés Cárdenas is a renowned hepatologist with extensive expertise in liver transplantation and interventional procedures in cirrhosis and portal hypertension. He is an attending physician and Consultant at the Institute of Digestive Diseases at Hospital Clinic, Barcelona, Spain and an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Barcelona. Dr. Cárdenas has authored over 200 peer-reviewed publications and 85 textbook chapters. His career includes advanced training at Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, where he completed fellowships in gastroenterology, hepatology, and therapeutic endoscopy. Dr. Cárdenas has served on several editorial boards, including as Deputy Editor of Liver Transplantation.
Dr. Timucin Taner is a Surgery and Consultant in Immunology Professor at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota. He serves as Chair of the Division of Transplantation Surgery and as Surgical Director of the adult and pediatric liver transplant programs. Dr. Taner is a leading researcher in liver transplantation immunobiology and liver-induced immunomodulation and has led advancements in transplant policy and cell therapy trials. With over 100 peer-reviewed publications and a history of leadership roles within AASLD and ILTS, Dr. Taner is a globally recognized expert in transplantation surgery and immunobiology.

Their leadership will undoubtedly ensure that Liver Transplantation continues to be a leading publication for international dialogue, research, and innovation.” Their appointments further enhance the ongoing relationship between AASLD and ILTS. “The joint hepatologist/surgical leadership will ensure great representation of clinical/translational and basic science research and cutting edge innovations in the liver transplantation field. ILTS is thrilled to work with the new leadership of the Liver Transplantation journal,” says Dr. Nazia Selzner, President of the ILTS.

Dr. Cárdenas and Dr. Taner will serve a five-year term beginning January 2026 and will start reviewing manuscript submissions in July 2025.
