The American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) and the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) are pleased to announce a new Practice Guideline on Treatment of Chronic Hepatitis B published in HEPATOLOGY, the premier publication in the field of liver disease.
Chronic hepatitis B (CHB) is a dynamic disease that progresses through multiple phases. The new guideline provides the latest evidence-based recommendations for prevention, surveillance, and treatment.
“The guideline addresses key questions that challenge clinicians in the care of individuals with CHB,” said AASLD Past President Norah Terrault, MD, MPH, FAASLD, University of Southern California. “Our updated recommendations give clinicians a clear, evidence-based framework to make timely, informed decisions that can prevent serious liver complications and improve patient outcomes.”
Prevention focuses on reducing maternal-to-infant and horizontal transmission, while surveillance addresses liver cancer monitoring in individuals with CHB who clear HBsAg, and those co-infected with hepatitis C, hepatitis D, or HIV.
For treatment, nucleos(t)ide analogues—entecavir, tenofovir disoproxil fumarate, and tenofovir alafenamide—are recommended for their high efficacy and safety. Treatment goals include preventing cirrhosis, reducing liver-related complications, achieving viral suppression, and, when possible, attaining functional cure through HBsAg loss. Shared decision-making ensures that care aligns with both clinical evidence and patient preferences.
The recommendations are grounded in a new systematic review and two existing reviews, providing a thorough, evidence-based approach to optimizing CHB care.
This latest guideline underscores AASLD’s continued commitment to advancing the science and practice of hepatology, and supporting clinicians in delivering high-quality, individualized care.
