This Liver Cancer Awareness Month, AASLD spotlights an open access HEPATOLOGY special issue and resources advancing evidence-based care.
ALEXANDRIA, Va. (October 6, 2026) — In recognition of Liver Cancer Awareness Month this October, the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) is elevating new research, clinical guidance, and educational resources aimed at advancing the prevention, detection and treatment of liver cancer.
Liver cancer is the third-leading cause of cancer death worldwide. Liver cancer incidence in the United States has more than tripled over the past four decades. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the most common form of primary liver cancer in adults, often develops in the setting of chronic liver disease, underscoring the importance of prevention, surveillance and timely, evidence-based care.
At the same time, progress across the field is creating new opportunities to improve outcomes.
“Liver Cancer Awareness Month provides an opportunity not only to raise awareness of the growing incidence and seriousness of liver cancer in the US and throughout the globe, but also to ensure clinicians have access to the latest evidence and resources needed to translate advances in screening, research, and treatment into better care for patients,” said AASLD President, Saul J. Karpen, MD, PhD, FAASLD. "As a global leader in advancing the science and practice of hepatology, AASLD is helping drive progress in liver cancer care by advancing research, convening experts, and translating evidence into clinical guidance and resources."
Leading these efforts is the October special issue of HEPATOLOGY, AASLD’s flagship journal. Available open access, the issue is dedicated entirely to liver cancer and brings together expert reviews exploring key developments across the field. The collection provides clinicians, researchers, and the broader liver community with timely perspectives on emerging science, evolving treatment strategies and the issues shaping the future of liver cancer care.
Also contributing to AASLD’s growing body of liver cancer resources is BEACON-HCC (Best Evidence and North American Consensus on HCC), published earlier this year in HEPATOLOGY. Developed by a multidisciplinary panel of 20 experts, the consensus framework provides an evidence-based approach to navigating increasingly complex treatment decisions in HCC and complements AASLD’s broader clinical guidance and educational resources. Explore the latest BEACON-HCC viewpoint articles BEACON-HCC through the lens of a large U.S. multidisciplinary program and Light across the Pacific Ocean: An Asian perspective on BEACON-HCC, offering perspectives on how the consensus framework can inform multidisciplinary HCC care across diverse clinical settings and regions
The focus on liver cancer will continue at The Liver Meeting® (TLM) 2026, Nov. 5–9 in Denver, the premier gathering for the global hepatology community. Experts from around the world will come together to share the latest research and perspectives shaping liver cancer care, with programming spanning HCC screening and surveillance, multidisciplinary care, patient-informed treatment decisions, emerging therapies, MASLD and HCC, and advances in clinical research.
Beyond the latest research, AASLD offers resources to help liver health professionals put evidence into practice, including HCC Practice Guidance; the Liver Cancer Special Interest Group (SIG), connecting members with shared interests to collaborate, exchange knowledge and advance the field; and continuing education through LiverLearning®, including the new Liver Cancer Systemic Therapy Certificate Program, Liver Cancer 100: The Fundamentals of Liver Cancer Care, and HCC in the Real World: Evolving Paradigms for High-Risk Patients.
