Webinar: Impact of COVID-19 on Global Elimination of Viral Hepatitis: The US Perspective

On October 22, AASLD hosted a webinar where the discussion focused on COVID-19's major impact on the goal of global elimination of viral hepatitis.

This webinar will:

  • Discuss the impact of SARs-CoV-2 on the viral care cascade
  • Identify services disrupted by COVID-19 that will impact the future of HCV elimination in the US
  • Outline innovative alternatives to minimize the influence of COVID19 on viral hepatitis elimination

AASLD / AMH / CASL Webinar: COVID-19 and The Liver in North America: Impact of Contrasting Health Care Systems

On September 24, AASLD / AMH / CASL joined forces to lead a timely discussion on the impact of the varied public health responses to the COVID-19 pandemic on patients with liver disease. After providing an update on the burden of COVID-19 in general and on the liver patient population throughout North America, speakers and panelists from Canada, Mexico and the United States discussed similarities and differences in terms of access to care in the three countries and address ways in which clinicians and researchers can address health care disparities in their own practices.

This webinar will:

  • Review the burden of COVID-19 in general and within the hepatology patient population in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
  • Compare and contrast current public health measures, guidelines, and community response throughout North America.
  • Describe the similarities and differences in access to care and related to health care disparities by region.
  • Identify possible solutions to reduce regional health care disparities related to COVID-19 in patients with liver disease.

On August 6, AASLD hosted a webinar that was targeted to a broad range of clinical investigators in hepatology and was structured to discuss the current status of clinical research in all domains of hepatology and the need for innovative strategies moving forward.

This webinar will:

  • Discuss the current status of clinical research in several domains of hepatology
  • Present hurdles in reentry in clinical research
  • Discuss potential innovative strategies to sustain academic development and discovery through clinical research in the post pandemic era
  • Address current and future challenges in clinical research among Early-Mid Career Investigators

AASLD-NASPGHAN-SPLIT COVID-19 and The Liver: Pediatric Perspective

On July 23, AASLD, NASPGHAN and SPLIT hosted a webinar for the pediatric hepatology community to help them understand the liver manifestations in children with SARS-COV2 infection and Multi-System Inflammatory Syndrome in children (MIS-C). In addition, there may be unique susceptibilities in children with chronic liver disease and liver transplantation.

Participants will be able to:

  • Understand liver involvement in SARS-COV2 infection and MIS-C
  • Improve care for children with chronic liver disease and pediatric liver transplant recipients
  • Develop strategies for safe re-entry to clinical practice in pediatric hepatology and transplantation

COVID-19 and the Liver: SARS-COV-2 Diagnostic Testing and Vaccine Development

On July 9, AASLD hosted a webinar where speakers discussed the different testing modalities for SARS-COV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. The role of antibody testing, and the interpretation were discussed, as was progress towards developing an effective vaccine. As COVID-19 continues to infect more people, vaccine development continues to be a necessity and a high priority.

This webinar will:

  • Discuss differences in diagnostic testing for SARS-COV-2 including nasopharyngeal and nasal PCR testing
  • Explain the significance of positive antibody tests and the limitations associated with antibody testing
  • Review the latest developments in vaccines for SARS-COV-2

AASLD-AST COVID-19 and the Liver: Chronic Liver Disease and Transplant

On June 25, AASLD and American Society of Transplantation (AST) teamed up to provide an update on the management of COVID-19 in transplant candidates and recipients, as COVID-19 has had a profound impact on liver transplantation and patients with advanced chronic liver disease.

This webinar:

  • Discussed emerging data on treatment and clinical outcomes among patients with chronic liver disease and cirrhosis with COVID-19
  • Described current approaches to treatment and immunosuppression adjustment in liver transplant recipients with COVID-19
  • Considered whether clinical outcomes among liver transplant recipients are different then non-transplant patients with COVID-19
  • Discussed the complex management decisions that occur in the peri-transplant period for patients with COVID-19

COVID-19 and the Liver: Telemedicine during the COVID-19 Pandemic and Beyond

On June 4, AASLD hosted a webinar dedicated to telemedicine during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Participants will be able to:

  • Identify recent changes in regulatory and financial barriers to telemedicine during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Discuss the integration of telemedicine and other innovative, technology-enabled approaches into care for patients with liver disease.
  • Consider and address the challenges of quality care delivery in a telemedicine-focused practice.
  • Recognize the disparities in telemedicine care delivery.
  • Consider the patient's perspective on telemedicine during the COVID-19 pandemic.

AASLD-ALEH: COVID-19 and The Liver in the Americas

On May 28, AASLD and ALEH jointly hosted a COVID-19 webinar presented solely in Spanish. This webinar provided attendees with information on the impact of COVID-19 on liver disease and transplantation in the Americas and the latest on COVID-19 management strategies related to the care of patients with chronic liver disease and pre- and post-transplantation. Faculty shared strategies surrounding re-entry and the re-opening of clinics and hospitals for patients with liver disease.

COVID-19 and the Liver – Reentry and Return to a Pre-Pandemic State

On May 14, AASLD hosted a webinar dedicated to reentry and return to a pre-pandemic state. It also:

  • Understood the challenges institutions face in resuming pre-pandemic operations.
  • Realized the ways to begin a safe outpatient reentry process for patients with liver disease.
  • Described how transplant centers are carefully planning for reentry.

COVID-19 and The Liver – Antibody Testing and Treatment Recommendations

On April 30, AASLD hosted a webinar dedicated to antibody testing and treatment recommendations. It also:

  • Described updates to the COVID-19 pandemic's effect on the liver and its impact on hepatology and liver transplant providers.
  • Helped attendees to understand and review management strategies in patients with COVID-19 and chronic liver disease.
  • Provided information regarding diagnostic antibody tests for SARS-CoV2 exposure and review data on the possibility of subsequent immune protection from COVID-19.

On April 16, AASLD hosted a webinar that highlighted information from the April 16 update to the "Clinical Insights for Hepatology and Liver Transplant Providers During the COVID-19 Pandemic" paper. It also:

  • Present a few cases submitted in advance by attendees. The experts discuss the next best steps to be taken in that patient’s care.
