In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, AASLD has created a series of webinars dedicated to ongoing discoveries and discussions about how it affects the care of liver patients.

Webinar: Facts vs. Fiction: What patients with Chronic Liver Disease want to know about COVID-19

On April 22, 2021, AASLD hosted a patient centered webinar to provide a brief overview on the risk of COVID-19 in patients with underlying liver disease. Patients on immune suppression and with advanced liver disease will be featured. An overview of the risks and benefit of vaccines for COVID-19 were also presented.

The four short presentations included:

  • "Why Chronic Liver Disease is Considered an Underlying Medical Condition with Increased Risks of Complications from COVID-19"
  • "Types of Vaccines: Which One is Right for Me?"
  • "Variants: What Does this Mean for Me?"
  • "CDC Guidelines: What should I do pre- & post-vaccination to protect myself?"

Webinar: Updates on COVID-19 Therapeutics, Vaccines and Guidance Documents

On March 16, 2021, AASLD hosted a webinar which discussed how the clinical management of COVID-19 continues to rapidly evolve in the wake of clinical trials and promising new therapies. Furthermore, a number of safe and effective vaccines are now available to prevent infection altogether.

The aim of this webinar is to provide:

  • State-of-the-art update on the clinical implications of SARS-CoV-2 viral variants
  • Review of evidence-based recommendations for outpatients with COVID-19 infection
  • An overview of the currently available mRNA and Adenoviral vaccines to prevent COVID-19
  • Recommendations on how to tailor therapeutics and vaccines for use in patients with compensated and decompensated liver disease as well as liver transplant recipients

Webinar: Mental Health & Burnout in the Pandemic: Name It, Frame It and Tame It

On March 4, 2021, AASLD hosted a webinar where it was discussed how Physician/APP mental health, stress, and burnout are among the impacts that are rarely discussed, but have major implications to the care and treatment of patients with COVID-19 and CLD.

  • Discuss how COVID-19 exacerbates the risk of mental "dis-health" and burnout
  • Describe how to recognize and acknowledge mental health issues in oneself and colleagues
  • Provide strategies to mitigate or manage mental "dis-health" and burnout

On February 25, 2021, AASLD hosted a webinar which reviewed how the Americas have adapted to the challenges that COVID-19 has presented and how different approaches to the treatment of COVID-19 has helped develop best practice in the following areas of hepatology during this pandemic.

  • Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease/Metabolic Associated Fatty Liver Disease

Webinar: COVID-19 Vaccination in Patients with Liver Disease

On January 28, 2021, AASLD hosted a webinar which discussed the development of the vaccine to battle COVID-19. Understanding the safety and efficacy of these vaccines in patients with liver disease is critical to our institutions, our patients and their families.

This webinar:

  • Discussed the clinical and immunological issues of conventional vaccines in patients with liver disease.
  • Reviewed the safety of vaccines with adenoviral vectors in liver disease patients.
  • Reviewed the safety of RNA vaccines in patients with liver disease.

On December 10, AASLD hosted a webinar where the discussion focused on COVID-19 and Alcohol-associated liver disease.

AASLD / AMH / CASL Webinar: COVID-19 and The Liver in North America: Impact of Contrasting Health Care Systems

On September 24, AASLD / AMH / CASL joined forces to lead a timely discussion on the impact of the varied public health responses to the COVID-19 pandemic on patients with liver disease. After providing an update on the burden of COVID-19 in general and on the liver patient population throughout North America, speakers and panelists from Canada, Mexico and the United States discussed similarities and differences in terms of access to care in the three countries and address ways in which clinicians and researchers can address health care disparities in their own practices.

This webinar will:

  • Review the burden of COVID-19 in general and within the hepatology patient population in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
  • Compare and contrast current public health measures, guidelines, and community response throughout North America.
  • Describe the similarities and differences in access to care and related to health care disparities by region.
  • Identify possible solutions to reduce regional health care disparities related to COVID-19 in patients with liver disease.

On August 6, AASLD hosted a webinar that was targeted to a broad range of clinical investigators in hepatology and was structured to discuss the current status of clinical research in all domains of hepatology and the need for innovative strategies moving forward.

  • Discuss the current status of clinical research in several domains of hepatology
  • Present hurdles in reentry in clinical research
  • Discuss potential innovative strategies to sustain academic development and discovery through clinical research in the post pandemic era

AASLD-NASPGHAN-SPLIT COVID-19 and The Liver: Pediatric Perspective

On July 23, AASLD, NASPGHAN and SPLIT hosted a webinar for the pediatric hepatology community to help them understand the liver manifestations in children with SARS-COV2 infection and Multi-System Inflammatory Syndrome in children (MIS-C). In addition, there may be unique susceptibilities in children with chronic liver disease and liver transplantation.

Participants will be able to:

  • Understand liver involvement in SARS-COV2 infection and MIS-C
  • Improve care for children with chronic liver disease and pediatric liver transplant recipients
  • Develop strategies for safe re-entry to clinical practice in pediatric hepatology and transplantation

COVID-19 and the Liver: SARS-COV-2 Diagnostic Testing and Vaccine Development

On July 9, AASLD hosted a webinar where speakers discussed the different testing modalities for SARS-COV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. The role of antibody testing, and the interpretation were discussed, as was progress towards developing an effective vaccine. As COVID-19 continues to infect more people, vaccine development continues to be a necessity and a high priority.

This webinar will:

  • Discuss differences in diagnostic testing for SARS-COV-2 including nasopharyngeal and nasal PCR testing
  • Explain the significance of positive antibody tests and the limitations associated with antibody testing
  • Review the latest developments in vaccines for SARS-COV-2
