Advancing Science in Cholestatic Liver Diseases: A HEPATOLOGY Special Issue

ALEXANDRIA, Virginia — The American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) is pleased to share the Special Issue on Cholestasis published by HEPATOLOGY, the premier publication in the field of liver disease.

Cholestatic liver diseases—such as primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), and IgG4-related cholangitis—pose a significant but often underrecognized burden. Unlike viral hepatitis or liver cancer, their epidemiology and economic impact remain less defined.

In this issue, experts review the latest data on disease prevalence, quality of life, and healthcare costs, offering vital information to guide future policy and research priorities.

"This important collection highlights critical progress in pathophysiology, disease mechanisms, and therapeutic strategies, providing valuable insights for researchers, clinicians, and healthcare policymakers,” said HEPATOLOGY Editor-in-Chief Gregory J. Gores, MD, FAASLD, Mayo Clinic, Rochester.

Key highlights include insights into the epidemiology, burden, and quality-of-life impact of cholestatic liver diseases, advances in understanding immune mechanisms and cholangiocyte biology, and emerging therapeutic strategies, including new FDA-approved treatments for PBC.

It also highlights novel perspectives on PSC pathogenesis, genetic cholangiopathies in pediatrics, drug-induced cholestatic injury, and challenges of disease recurrence after transplantation.

“By shining a bright spotlight on cholestatic liver diseases, this thematic issue not only captures the latest progress but also sets the stage for new lines of investigation and therapeutic development,” said HEPATOLOGY Deputy Editor Harmeet Malhi, MBBS, FAASLD, Mayo Clinic, Rochester.
