Julie Deal Announces Retirement
AASLD executive served the society for more than two decades
ALEXANDRIA, Virginia (Dec. 20, 2024) — The American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) has announced that Deputy CEO and AASLD Foundation Executive Director Julie Deal will be retiring after 25 years of service to the organization.
During her tenure with AASLD, Julie has contributed to every aspect of the organization. Joining the staff in 1999, Julie led the development of The Liver Meeting® from an outsourced service to building an in-house team. She managed the growth of the meeting from TLM's original home in Chicago to new destinations, including Dallas, Boston, Washington DC, and San Francisco. As the AASLD expanded, she took on new roles overseeing education and training, developing global initiatives and programs, and implementing AASLD's Special Interest Groups (SIGs).
“Julie’s dedication to growing the field of Hepatology has been crucial to the success of the society,” notes Matthew D’Uva, AASLD CEO. “She has built strong relationships with countless AASLD members and there is no doubt that her presence will be greatly missed”.
Most recently, Julie has served as AASLD Deputy CEO and Executive Director of the AASLD Foundation. She has managed the tremendous growth of the Foundation from its inception in 2015 to its current success in supporting the future of hepatology. Julie was instrumental in helping to secure the AASLD Foundation’s largest and most transformative gift of $25 million from the Barbara Brunckhorst Foundation to create the R. Todd Stravitz Research Fund. During her tenure, she also significantly expanded the Foundation’s awards portfolio of programs, including growing AASLD's patient engagement program.
Julie's significant contributions to AASLD and the AASLD Foundation will have a lasting impact on the society as well as the next generation of hepatologists. Julie plans to take time to pursue her creative talents as well as to travel and visit her five children, siblings, and friends. Her last day at AASLD will be on February 7, 2025.
