This month’s issue offers perspective on how metabolic syndrome substantially increases the rate of poor outcomes for patients with ALD, as highlighted in an important systematic review by Peddu and Chen. Nguyen and Ferrer lead a group demonstrating the high rate of advanced liver disease in patients with telomere disorders. Additionally, Allen and colleagues from Mayo show that liver stiffness measured by MRE can identify a broader pool of therapeutic candidates by expanding the range of stiffness values (2.8-6.4kPa).
This issue also features exciting studies on cell-cell interactions, the dysregulation of the immune microenvironment, and the application of gene therapy in various liver diseases. Two compelling studies reveal the mechanisms by which hepatic stellate cells drive MASLD-HCC, as well as the protective roles of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in acetaminophen-induced liver injury. Another study demonstrates that resolvin D1 exhibits hepatoprotective effects in a mouse model of alcohol-associated liver disease. From a translational perspective, a study highlights the potential of gene therapy to correct the ABCB11 gene, offering a promising treatment for progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis type 2 (PFIC2). Finally, an excellent review highlights the disease spectrum, pathophysiology, and immune dysregulation of T-cell-mediated pediatric acute liver failure (TC-PALF).
