Malnutrition in Biliary Atresia: Assessment, Management, and Outcomes

Sundaram – 19 October 2021 – Children with biliary atresia (BA), particularly infants, are at high risk for malnutrition attributed to a multitude of factors, including poor oral intake and intolerance of enteral feeding, fat malabsorption, abnormal nutrient metabolism, and increased caloric demand. Malnutrition and sarcopenia negatively impact outcomes in BA, leading to higher pretransplant and posttransplant morbidity and mortality.

Community Socioeconomic Deprivation Predicts Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis

Satapathy – 19 October 2021 – In order to determine the relationship between socioeconomic deprivation and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)/nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), we retrospectively reviewed the electronic medical records of 1,430 patients in a large tertiary health care network in New York. These patients underwent liver biopsy over a 10‐year period and were included in our study if they had evidence of NAFLD/NASH on liver biopsy.

International Population Study in Spain, Cuba, and the United States of Attitudes Toward Organ Donation Among the Cuban Population

Gutiérrez, Gerardo Palacios, Marina Iniesta‐Sepúlveda, Pablo Ramírez, Ana Isabel López‐Navas – 17 October 2021 – Cuban immigrants constitute an important group in both the United States and Spain, with different behaviors toward organ donation having been described among the different Latin American nationalities. We analyzed the attitude toward organ donation among the Cuban populations in Cuba, Spain, and Florida.

Covid‐19 and Liver Injury: Role of Inflammatory Endotheliopathy, Platelet Dysfunction, and Thrombosis

McConnell, Reiichiro Kondo, Nao Kawaguchi, Yasuko Iwakiri – 17 October 2021 – Liver injury, characterized predominantly by elevated aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase, is a common feature of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) symptoms caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome‐coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2). Additionally, SARS‐CoV‐2 infection is associated with acute‐on‐chronic liver failure in patients with cirrhosis and has a notably elevated mortality in patients with alcohol‐related liver disease compared to other etiologies.

Cirrhosis regression is associated with improved clinical outcomes in patients with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis
