Iron overload disorders

Christine C. Hsu, Nizar H. Senussi, Kleber Y. Fertrin, Kris V. Kowdley – 13 June 2022 – Iron overload disorders represent a variety of conditions that lead to increased total body iron stores and resultant end‐organ damage. An elevated ferritin and transferrin‐iron saturation can be commonly encountered in the evaluation of elevated liver enzymes. Confirmatory homeostatic iron regulator (HFE) genetic testing for C282Y and H63D, mutations most encountered in hereditary hemochromatosis, should be pursued in evaluation of hyperferritinemia.

Waitlist mortality of young patients with biliary atresia: Impact of allocation policy and living donor liver transplantation

Hedayatullah Esmati, Marieke Rosmalen, Patrick F. Rheenen, Marieke T. Boer, Aad P. Berg, Hubert P. J. Doef, Michel Rayar, Ruben H.J. Kleine, Robert J. Porte, Vincent E. Meijer, Henkjan J. Verkade – 13 June 2022 – Patients with biliary atresia (BA) below 2 years of age in need of a transplantation largely rely on partial grafts from deceased donors (deceased donor liver transplantation [DDLT]) or living donors (living donor liver transplantation [LDLT]).

Logistical burden of offers and allocation inefficiency in circle‐based liver allocation

Nicholas L. Wood, Douglas N. VanDerwerken, Dorry L. Segev, Sommer E. Gentry – 12 June 2022 – Recent changes to liver allocation replaced donor service areas with circles as the geographic unit of allocation. Circle‐based allocation might increase the number of transplantation centers and candidates required to place a liver, thereby increasing the logistical burden of making and responding to offers on organ procurement organizations and transplantation centers.

A single hepatitis B virus genome with a reporter allows the entire viral life cycle to be monitored in primary human hepatocytes

Ariunaa Sumiyadorj, Kazuhisa Murai, Tetsuro Shimakami, Kazuyuki Kuroki, Tomoki Nishikawa, Masaki Kakuya, Atsumu Yamada, Ying Wang, Atsuya Ishida, Takayoshi Shirasaki, Shotaro Kawase, Ying‐Yi Li, Hikari Okada, Kouki Nio, Kazunori Kawaguchi, Taro Yamashita, Yoshio Sakai, Davaadorj Duger, Eishiro Mizukoshi, Masao Honda, Shuichi Kaneko – 11 June 2022 – For the development of antiviral agents to eliminate hepatitis B virus (HBV), it is essential to establish an HBV cell culture system that can easily monitor HBV infection.

Tetrahydroxylated bile acids improve cholestatic liver and bile duct injury in the Mdr2−/− mouse model of sclerosing cholangitis via immunomodulatory effects

Claudia D. Fuchs, Emmanuel D. Dixon, Tim Hendrikx, Veronika Mlitz, Annika Wahlström, Marcus Ståhlman, Hubert Scharnagl, Tatjana Stojakovic, Christoph J. Binder, Hanns‐Ulrich Marschall, Michael Trauner – 11 June 2022 – Bile salt export pump (Bsep) (Abcb11)−/− mice are protected from acquired cholestatic injury due to metabolic preconditioning with a hydrophilic bile acid (BA) pool with formation of tetrahydroxylated bile acids (THBAs).
