Larusso – 1 November 1987 – Since the liver is thought to be the major organ for the metabolism of renin, the rate‐limiting enzyme in the renin‐angiotensin cascade, we examined the kinetics and regulation of renin extraction by the isolated perfused rat liver. Partially purified, hog kidney renin was continuously infused into isolated rat livers perfused in a nonrecirculating manner with serum‐free medium.

HYMANJ. ZIMMERMAN – 1 November 1987 – The hepatotoxic effect of venom sac extract (VSE) of the Oriental hornet has already been demonstrated using the well‐known models of experimental toxicology: in vivo, isolated in situ and in vitro. The present work deals with a series of 48 rats treated daily with 5 mg VSE/kg body weight for 1–14 days. Serum activities of alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and γ‐glutamyl transferase (GGT) were measured. Liver tissue fractionation was performed.

Kay Tanaka – 1 November 1987 – Treatment of rats with hypoglycaemic doses of hypoglycin has been shown to abolish the relative detritiation of [2‐3H, U‐14C]glucose [Osmundsen, Billington, Taylor & Sherratt (1978) Biochem. J. 170, 337–342], indicating that both the Cori and the glucose/glucose 6‐phosphate cycles were inhibited in vivo. This inhibition was confirmed and, in addition, it was shown that the conversion in vivo of both [14C]lactate and [14C]fructose into glucose was decreased after hypoglycin treatment.

William Browder, Nicholas R. di Luzio – 1 November 1987 – Previous studies from our laboratory have demonstrated that particulate glucan is efficacious in the therapy of a syngeneic murine reticulum cell sarcoma (M5706), which specifically metastasizes from its primary site to the liver. The present study was undertaken to examine the therapeutic efficacy of a newly developed soluble glucan, in combination with cyclophosphamide in the treatment of hepatic metastatic disease.

Treem – 1 November 1987 – The diagnosis of arteriohepatic dysplasia may be difficult, particularly in very young patients with no family history, and the pathogenesis of the disorder remains obscure. It has been reported that the typical ultrastructural changes of cholestasis are scant in this condition and proposed that there is a failure of the hepatocytes to secrete bile into the canaliculi.

Anne‐Marie Durand‐Schneider, Michèle Maurice, Micheline Dumont, Gérard Feldmann – 1 November 1987 – The hepatocyte plasma membrane presents a morphological and functional regionalization into three domains: the sinusoidal; the lateral, and the canalicular. The mechanisms responsible for the biogenesis and maintenance of this regionalization are poorly understood. In this work, we have used colchicine and phalloidin, two drugs known to interfere with the secretory processes in hepatocytes, to study whether they also affect the transport of membrane proteins.
