Human macrophage ferroportin biology and the basis for the ferroportin disease

Manuela Sabelli, Giuliana Montosi, Cinzia Garuti, Angela Caleffi, Stefania Oliveto, Stefano Biffo, Antonello Pietrangelo – 27 December 2016 – Ferroportin (FPN1) is the sole iron exporter in mammals, but its cell‐specific function and regulation are still elusive. This study examined FPN1 expression in human macrophages, the cells that are primarily responsible on a daily basis for plasma iron turnover and are central in the pathogenesis of ferroportin disease (FD), the disease attributed to lack‐of‐function FPN1 mutations.

Eight weeks of ledipasvir/sofosbuvir is effective for selected patients with genotype 1 hepatitis C virus infection

Kris V. Kowdley, Vinay Sundaram, Christie Y. Jeon, Kamran Qureshi, Nyan L. Latt, Amandeep Sahota, Stephen Lott, Michael P. Curry, Naoky Tsai, Nathorn Chaiyakunapruk, Yoori Lee, Jorg Petersen, Peter Buggisch – 27 December 2016 – Eight weeks duration of ledipasvir/sofosbuvir (LDV/SOF) can be considered in genotype 1 hepatitis C virus–infected patients who are treatment‐naive, do not have cirrhosis, and have a pretreatment viral load <6,000,000 IU/mL. The effectiveness of this regimen, however, has not been fully confirmed by real‐world experience.

New classification of liver biopsy assessment for fibrosis in chronic hepatitis B patients before and after treatment

Theise, Hong You, Jidong Jia – 27 December 2016 – Liver fibrosis is the net result of dynamic changes between fibrogenesis and fibrolysis. Evidence has shown that antiviral therapy can reverse liver fibrosis or even early cirrhosis caused by hepatitis B virus.
