Liver graft preservation using perfluorocarbon improves the outcomes of simulated donation after cardiac death liver transplantation in rats

Shinya Okumura, Tadahiro Uemura, Xiangdong Zhao, Yuki Masano, Tatsuaki Tsuruyama, Yasuhiro Fujimoto, Taku Iida, Shintaro Yagi, Dmitri Bezinover, Bruce Spiess, Toshimi Kaido, Shinji Uemoto – 26 June 2017 – The outcomes of liver transplantation (LT) from donation after cardiac death (DCD) donors remain poor due to severe warm ischemia injury. Perfluorocarbon (PFC) is a novel compound with high oxygen carrying capacity.

Liver transplantation in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Mohammed Al Sebayel, Faisal Abaalkhail, Saleh Al Abbad, Hamad AlBahili, Hussien Elsiesy, Maha Aleid, Waleed Al‐Hamoudi – 26 June 2017 – The first liver transplantation (LT) in Saudi Arabia was performed in 1991; however, it was not until 1994 that the first structured LT program was launched. Until 1997, all LTs in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) were deceased donor liver transplantations.

A new formula for estimation of standard liver volume using computed tomography–measured body thickness

Ka Wing Ma, Kenneth S. H. Chok, Albert C. Y. Chan, Henry S. C. Tam, Wing Chiu Dai, Tan To Cheung, James Y. Y. Fung, Chung Mau Lo – 26 June 2017 – The objective of this article is to derive a more accurate and easy‐to‐use formula for finding estimated standard liver volume (ESLV) using novel computed tomography (CT) measurement parameters. New formulas for ESLV have been emerging that aim to improve the accuracy of estimation. However, many of these formulas contain body surface area measurements and logarithms in the equations that lead to a more complicated calculation.

A matched pair analysis of multicenter longterm follow‐up after split‐liver transplantation with extended right grafts

Mitchell W. Ross, Matteo Cescon, Roberta Angelico, Enzo Andorno, Giorgio Rossi, Antonio Pinna, Luciano Carlis, Umberto Baccarani, Umberto Cillo, Michele Colledan, Vincenzo Mazzaferro, Giuseppe Tisone, Massimo Rossi, Fabio Tuzzolino, Duilio Pagano, Salvatore Gruttadauria, George Mazariegos, Bruno Gridelli, Marco Spada – 26 June 2017 – Split‐liver transplantation has been proposed as an alternative to whole liver (WL) transplantation to expand the donor pool, but studies comparing adult longterm outcomes between the 2 methods are conflicting and limited.

Disparities in Eurotransplant liver transplantation wait‐list outcome between patients with and without model for end‐stage liver disease exceptions

Andreas Umgelter, Alexander Hapfelmeier, Wouter Kopp, Marieke van Rosmalen, Xavier Rogiers, Markus Guba, for the Eurotransplant Liver Advisory Committee – 26 June 2017 – The sickest‐first principle in donor‐liver allocation can be implemented by allocating organs to patients with cirrhosis with the highest Model for End‐Stage Liver Disease (MELD) scores. For patients with other risk factors, standard exceptions (SEs) and nonstandard exceptions (NSEs) have been developed.

Alcohol abstinence in patients surviving an episode of alcoholic hepatitis: Prediction and impact on long‐term survival

José Altamirano, Hugo López‐Pelayo, Javier Michelena, Patricia D. Jones, Lluisa Ortega, Pere Ginès, Juan Caballería, Antoni Gual, Ramón Bataller, Anna Lligoña – 23 June 2017 – Alcoholic hepatitis (AH) is the most severe form of alcoholic liver disease. Most studies have focused on short‐term prognosis, whereas factors associated with long‐term survival are largely unknown.

Argininosuccinate synthase 1 (ASS1): A marker of unclassified hepatocellular adenoma and high bleeding risk

Elodie Henriet, Aya Abou Hammoud, Jean‐William Dupuy, Benjamin Dartigues, Zakaria Ezzoukry, Nathalie Dugot‐Senant, Thierry Leste‐Lasserre, Nestor Pallares‐Lupon, Macha Nikolski, Brigitte Le Bail, Jean‐Frédéric Blanc, Charles Balabaud, Paulette Bioulac‐Sage, Anne‐Aurélie Raymond, Frédéric Saltel – 23 June 2017 – Hepatocellular adenomas (HCAs) are rare benign tumors divided into three main subgroups defined by pathomolecular features, HNF1A (H‐HCA), mutated β‐catenin (b‐HCA), and inflammatory (IHCA).
