Prognosis of acute variceal bleeding: Is being on beta‐blockers an aggravating factor? A short‐term survival analysis

Andrea Ribeiro de Souza, Vincenzo La Mura, Annalisa Berzigotti, Juan Carlos García‐Pagán, Juan G. Abraldes, Jaime Bosch – 4 September 2015 – Nonselective beta‐blockers (NSBB) are widely used because they have been proved effective in the prophylaxis of acute variceal bleeding (AVB). However, a significant proportion of patients still experience AVB while on treatment with NSBB, and its impact on prognosis of AVB is unknown.

Thrombelastography‐guided blood product use before invasive procedures in cirrhosis with severe coagulopathy: A randomized, controlled trial

Lesley De Pietri, Marcello Bianchini, Roberto Montalti, Nicola De Maria, Tommaso Di Maira, Bruno Begliomini, Giorgio Enrico Gerunda, Fabrizio di Benedetto, Guadalupe Garcia‐Tsao, Erica Villa – 4 September 2015 – Bleeding is a feared complication of invasive procedures in patients with cirrhosis and significant coagulopathy (as defined by routine coagulation tests) and is used to justify preprocedure use of fresh frozen plasma (FFP) and/or platelets (PLT).

Human immunodeficiency virus and liver disease: An update

Kenneth E. Sherman, Juergen Rockstroh, David Thomas – 4 September 2015 – Human immunodeficiency viral (HIV) infection affects approximately 1.2 million persons in the United States and 35 million worldwide. Progression to advanced liver disease remains a leading cause of death among HIV‐infected persons in the United States and elsewhere. Though mortality from HIV complications has been dramatically reduced wherever effective combination antiretroviral therapy is used, there has been little impact on liver‐related mortality.
