Solitary pulmonary nodule in the liver transplant candidate: Importance of diagnosis and treatment

Allan M. Concejero, Chee‐Chien Yong, Chao‐Long Chen, Hung‐I Lu, Chih‐Chi Wang, Shih‐Ho Wang, Yueh‐Wei Liu, Chin‐Hsiang Yang, Yu‐Fan Cheng, Bruno Jawan – 8 March 2010 – Our objectives were to define the incidence and etiology of solitary pulmonary nodules (SPNs) in patients undergoing living donor liver transplantation (LDLT), describe a diagnostic approach to the management of SPNs in LDLT, and define the impact of SPNs on the overall survival of adult LDLT recipients.

Human leukocyte antigen crossmatch testing is important for liver retransplantation

Angeline Goh, Mario Scalamogna, Tullia De Feo, Francesca Poli, Paul I. Terasaki – 5 March 2010 – Although human leukocyte antigen (HLA) crossmatching is often thought to be unnecessary for liver transplants (LTs), we provide evidence that for retransplants, it is essential. Sera from 139 retransplant patients who had received livers from deceased donors were retrospectively analyzed with single antigen beads on a Luminex platform for HLA antibodies.

Portal hyperperfusion: Mechanism of injury and stimulus for regeneration in porcine small‐for‐size transplantation

Constantino Fondevila, Amelia J. Hessheimer, Pilar Taurá, Olga Sánchez, David Calatayud, Nicolas de Riva, Javier Muñoz, Jose Fuster, Antoni Rimola, Juan C. García‐Valdecasas – 5 March 2010 – Understanding the pathogenesis of small‐for‐size (SFS) syndrome is critical to expanding the applicability of partial liver transplantation. We aimed to characterize its acute presentation and association with alterations in hepatic hemodynamics, microstructure, and regeneration in a porcine model. Eighteen SFS liver transplants were performed. Donors underwent 70% hepatectomy.

Prevention and treatment of rethrombosis after liver transplantation with an implantable pump of the portal vein

Zhengrong Shi, Lunan Yan, Jichun Zhao, Bo Li, Tianfu Wen, Mingqing Xu, Wentao Wang, Zheyu Chen, Jiaying Yang – 5 March 2010 – Implantable pumps have been used to prevent deep vein thrombosis and other diseases. In this article, we report for the first time the prevention and treatment of rethrombosis of the portal vein in liver transplantation with an implantable pump of the portal vein.

Procalcitonin as a prognostic marker for infectious complications in liver transplant recipients in an intensive care unit

Maartje A. J. van den Broek, Steven W. M. Olde Damink, Bjorn Winkens, Christoph E. Broelsch, Massimo Malagó, Andreas Paul, Fuat H. Saner – 5 March 2010 – Clinically significant infections (CSIs) are life‐threatening but difficult to diagnose after liver transplantation (LTx). This study investigates the value of procalcitonin (PCT) in addition to c‐reactive protein (CRP) and the leukocyte count (LC) as a prognostic marker for CSIs in LTx recipients. The clinical course of 135 LTx recipients was prospectively studied.
