Neuregulin/erythroblastic leukemia viral oncogene homolog 3 autocrine loop contributes to invasion and early recurrence of human hepatoma

Sen‐Yung Hsieh, Jung‐Ru He, Chih‐Yun Hsu, Wan‐Ju Chen, Rabindranath Bera, Kuo‐Yang Lin, Tsung‐Chieh Shih, Ming‐Chin Yu, Yu‐Jr Lin, Chee‐Jen Chang, Wen‐Hui Weng, Shiu‐Fen Huang – 19 November 2010 – Intrahepatic metastasis is the primary cause of the high recurrence and poor prognosis of human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, neither its molecular mechanisms nor markers for its prediction before hepatectomy have been identified. We recently revealed up‐regulation of erythroblastic leukemia viral oncogene homolog 3 (ERBB3) in human HCC.

Acetylcholinesterase, a key prognostic predictor for hepatocellular carcinoma, suppresses cell growth and induces chemosensitization

Yingjun Zhao, Xiaoying Wang, Tao Wang, Xin Hu, Xin Hui, Mingxia Yan, Qiang Gao, Taoyang Chen, Jinjun Li, Ming Yao, Dafang Wan, Jianren Gu, Jia Fan, Xianghuo He – 18 November 2010 – Acetylcholinesterase (ACHE) plays important roles in the cholinergic system, and its dysregulation is involved in a variety of human diseases. However, the roles and implications of ACHE in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remain elusive.

No resistance to tenofovir disoproxil fumarate detected after up to 144 weeks of therapy in patients monoinfected with chronic hepatitis B virus

Andrea Snow‐Lampart, Brandi Chappell, Maria Curtis, Yuao Zhu, Florence Myrick, James Schawalder, Kathryn Kitrinos, Evguenia S. Svarovskaia, Michael D. Miller, Jeff Sorbel, Jenny Heathcote, Patrick Marcellin, Katyna Borroto‐Esoda – 18 November 2010 – Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) is a nucleotide analogue with potent activity against human immunodeficiency virus type 1 and hepatitis B virus (HBV). To date, no reports of HBV clinical resistance to TDF have been confirmed.

Autoimmune acute liver failure: Proposed clinical and histological criteria

R. Todd Stravitz, Jay H. Lefkowitch, Robert J. Fontana, M. Eric Gershwin, Patrick S. C. Leung, Richard K. Sterling, Michael P. Manns, Gary L. Norman, William M. Lee, and the Acute Liver Failure Study Group – 18 November 2010 – Identifying autoimmune hepatitis as the etiology of acute liver failure (ALF) is potentially important, because administering corticosteroids might avoid the need for liver transplantation. However, clinical and histological criteria of autoimmune ALF (AI‐ALF) have not been defined.

Endocannabinoids in liver disease

Joseph Tam, Jie Liu, Bani Mukhopadhyay, Resat Cinar, Grzegorz Godlewski, George Kunos – 18 November 2010 – Endocannabinoids are lipid mediators of the same cannabinoid (CB) receptors that mediate the effects of marijuana. The endocannabinoid system (ECS) consists of CB receptors, endocannabinoids, and the enzymes involved in their biosynthesis and degradation, and it is present in both brain and peripheral tissues, including the liver. The hepatic ECS is activated in various liver diseases and contributes to the underlying pathologies.

Endoplasmic reticulum stress is a mediator of posttransplant injury in severely steatotic liver allografts

Christopher D. Anderson, Gundumi Upadhya, Kendra D. Conzen, Jianlou Jia, Elizabeth M. Brunt, Venkataswarup Tiriveedhi, Yan Xie, Sabarinathan Ramachandran, Thalachallour Mohanakumar, Nicholas O. Davidson, William C. Chapman – 16 November 2010 – Hepatic steatosis continues to present a major challenge in liver transplantation. These organs have been shown to have increased susceptibility to cold ischemia/reperfusion (CIR) injury in comparison with otherwise comparable lean livers; the mechanisms governing this increased susceptibility to CIR injury are not fully understood.
